The Castle Centre – Wayfinding design

Developing a sense of place for a new community hub

The Castle Centre is a new, state-of-the-art leisure centre, accessible to the whole community and at the heart of the £3bn Elephant and Castle regeneration. Set in a new public space and adjacent to the green lung of St Mary’s Churchyard, the centre has become a focal point for the local community.

Endpoint was initially appointed to develop the technically challenging, 3m high exterior signage but it quickly became apparent that a full internal wayfinding design scheme was required and quickly.

The centre’s identity has echoes of sporting lines and track markings and became our inspiration for the wider wayfinding graphics. We developed a bespoke pictogram suite that gives the scheme a unique character and we treated everything from pool depth warnings, sauna and steam room identifiers and other messages with the same attention to detail.

We chose furniture grade birch plywood with a laminated Formica surface for the sign material, as this felt right with the linear graphic theme but also worked in harmony with the wider interior finishes and furniture elements.

We went on to manage the fabrication and installation, ensuring the wayfinding design was implemented flawlessly.
